Steve, he does go short in a down market, at times. It’s never been explained whether it’s just a risk tolerance for doing so or not, but he does definitely do that typically after a certain amount of time.
Depending upon his retirement/pension funds getting short may be a challenge. If it’s a traditional 403(b) or 401(k) those choices are pretty limited as they’re unlikely to offer an inverse fund. Shorting the market is typically hazardous to one’s health in the long-term. However, shorting is, of course, extremely profitable if one is good at it.
